Welcome to the House of Learning
The official opening of the Longhouse was celebrated October 15, 2007. Over 500 people gathered to celebrate the culmination of more than two years of planning and construction.
The cutting of the ceremonial cedar bark ribbon celebrated not just the building itself, but the building of important relationships and friendships that will enrich and strengthen the lives of all who enter its doors. We invite you to visit.
Mission
The House of Learning is a gathering place to teach, learn and share cultural traditions, knowledge, and identity. It is a place to acknowledge and respect our unique differences and diversity.
Purpose
To build bridges of understanding and knowledge among local Tribes, students, educators and visitors by establishing a special place for all students to meet, study, and interact with one another;
- Serve as an integral tool for the recruitment and retention of American Indian students in order to increase the number of American Indians who experience educational success and post-secondary education;
- Ensure a site for college classes and special courses as well as presentations, art, storytelling, and events that embrace the spirit of the Longhouse;
- Provide a gathering space for cultural ceremonies, conferences, performances, art exhibits, tribal youth experiences and community events that may be coordinated with the college’s educational offerings;
- Provide a place in which to experience and study art, culture, and history and as such, expand the perceptions and knowledge of all students and community members;
- Establish a cultural and educational resource for understanding, honoring and sharing our cultural heritages.
